Ah, the Classic Knife. Though the word “classic” is used here as a noun—meaning, a work of art of recognized and established value, the definition of “classic” as an adjective also works. Classic: adj, judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind. Whichever way you define it, the Classic Knife, is, well, classic. Released on October 18, 2019, the Classic Knife is modeled after the Badlands Bowie knife designed by Mick Strider.

However, out of all CS2 Knife Types, there’s a Classic Knife skin that is best defined by combining both definitions. We’ll call it the classic Classic Knife. CS2 (CS:GO) players know it by its real name—the Classic Knife Case Hardened: Blue Gem.

Come along with us as we explore the Classic Knife Case Hardened: Blue Gem. We’ll cover what classic knife patterns are, how much they cost, and most importantly, how to get your hands on one. We’ll also showcase the 3 best possible blue gems.

Classic Case Hardened Patterns Explained

Though the statement, “every blue gem is a blue gem” is factually true, it’s important to understand that not all blue gems are the same. In fact, the more blue the blade contains, the rarer and more valuable the classic case hardened blue gem is.

Aside from a handful of blue gems, every blade contains a mix of blue, gold, yellow, and purple colors. Each pattern is determined by a seed number from 0-999. Let’s take a close look at the different classic knife patterns.

Patterns

As there are 1000 patterns, and obtaining a blue gem is rare in itself, you’re very unlikely to receive 2 similar knives. The patterns are typically thought of in 4 tiers, with tier one containing the more rare and valuable patterns, and tier 4 containing the less rare and valuable patterns.

Here’s the list of tiers and patterns:

  • Tier 1: 403, 449, 585,  681, 169, 456, 601, 316, 577, 634, 281
  • Tier 2: 704, 922, 55, 583, 288, 668, 107, 166, 606, 651, 910, 946
  • Tier 3: 837, 915, 880, 556, 628, 345, 850, 202, 583, 288, 668, 239, 447, 372, 67, 170, 336, 417, 349, 632, 496, 533, 107, 529, 887, 262, 503, 393, 162, 430, 269, 954, 383, 166, 797, 867, 180, 374, 157, 588, 537, 116, 916, 624, 715, 103, 187
  • Tier 4: 959, 523, 176, 812, 669, 88, 507, 525, 286, 429, 700, 179, 698, 442, 899, 222, 91, 818, 941, 613, 866, 675, 606, 108, 325, 750, 610, 828, 955, 519, 294, 516, 235, 794, 821, 227, 619, 151, 693, 710, 299, 600, 807, 387, 59, 869, 95, 719, 292, 400, 805, 203, 689, 995, 665, 14, 973, 298, 526, 547, 462, 84, 504, 551, 124, 859, 878, 646, 138, 806, 564, 680, 315, 872, 3, 528, 902, 790, 820, 546, 969, 740, 651, 212, 910

As you climb the tiers, you’ll notice that there are fewer and fewer patterns within each tier.

Making the best patterns even harder to get a hold of. And, as a general rule of thumb, the more blue the blade has, the better the pattern.

Here’s a quick look at the top-3 Classic Knife Case Hardened Blue Gem patterns:

#403

Classic Case Hardened Blue Gem Pattern #403

Pattern 403 is the best classic case hardened blue gem as it has an unbelievable amount of blue on the front side of the blade. There is only a small trace of gold near the handle.

Percentage of blue on the blade: 98%

Unique identifying marks: Looking at the blade is almost like looking at a blade sculpted from glacier ice. It almost appears as if the small amount of gold on the blade is actually the rarity.

Price: In 2022, a minimal-wear version sold for $20,000.

Overall thoughts: One can only imagine what a factory-new blade would cost today. We can only think about a sharpened icicle placed on a handle when we look at this beauty.

#585

Classic Case Hardened Blue Gem Pattern #585

Pattern 585 is a mix between pattern 403 and pattern 449. Meaning, the gold and yellow aren’t concentrated near the handle. There’s a small amount of gold near the middle of the handle. However, it has a bit more blue than 449 yet it’s not as vivid as 403.

Percentage of blue on the blade: 96%

Unique identifying marks: The gold spot mid-handle helps you distinguish this blade between 403 and 449—both of those classic knife patterns show a concentration of gold and yellow at the base of the blade right above the handle.

Price: $15,000 on the upper end.

Overall thoughts: At this price point, players buy the 585 because they simply can’t get their hands on the 403. But who can blame them? The 585 pattern is almost as legit as it gets.

#449

Classic Case Hardened Blue Gem Pattern #449

Pattern 449 looks similar to pattern 403. This skin has almost as much blue. However, it’s not as vivid.

Percentage of blue on the blade: 94%

Unique identifying marks:  There’s a bit more yellow and gold near the handle. You’ll also notice a bit more purple spread throughout the pattern. It’s like pattern 403—but not 403.

Price: Recent sales have reached as high as $5,000.

Overall thoughts: Though pattern 449 isn’t as vivid as pattern 403, it’s a very nice skin to own. In fact, it’s the second-best blue gem out there. If you have it, hold on to it. Unless you need the cash.

Pattern difference

Classic Case Hardened Blue Gem Pattern Difference between 403. 585 and 449 patterns

The difference in value is the difference in patterns. Period. The more blue a blade contains, the more rare and valuable it is. If you can get your hands on a tier 1 or 2 Classic Knife blue gem, you’re doing well.

However, it’s still about taste. We prefer pattern 681 over everything except 403. In our opinion, pattern 681 is amazing as it looks as if the warmth of the holder’s hand melted the ice near the handle. The rest of the blade is blue.

How to Get Classic Knife Case Hardened?

If you’re looking for a tier 1 blue gem, you only have 2 options—a third-party site or a CS20 case. If you are looking for tier 2 or lower, you can try the Steam Marketplace. Tier 1 blue gems can’t be found there as Steam limits the price to under $2,000. Simply put, tier 1 blue gems are worth much more than that. How much? A lot.

How much does a Classic Knife Case Hardened cost?

The value of a classic case hardened knife really depends on the pattern. If you’re considering buying a tier 1 blue gem, expect to pay anywhere from $4,000 up to $20,000.

If you want a tier 2, 3, or 4, you can expect to pay much less. On the lower side, a tier 4 blue gem can cost as little as a few hundred dollars. That’s still not cheap. However, it’s far from $20,000.

Unlocking the Classic Knife Case Hardened: Float and Wear Values

Like most skins, knives, weapons, or gloves, the value lies in the wear and float. These words basically mean “how new it looks.” The newer something looks ultimately means the more valuable it is. This isn’t always true. However, it generally is. You’ll want to keep in mind that a decent knife needs good knife glove combos.

You’ll need to remember that the newer a skin looks, the more vivid the design appears. And that normally translates to a higher cost. And most of the time, a higher cost is tied to rarity.

Odds of Getting a Blue Gem Classic Knife

We don’t want to discourage you from trying to get classic blue gem patterns. However, getting a tier 1 blue gem is like hitting the lottery. The best of the best come with odds around 1 and 5,000,000. Yes, you read that correctly—that’s 5 million. There’s one important thing to keep in mind, someone’s got to get them. It’s about the same as getting the most expensive gloves in cs2.

Future Market Value of Classic Knife Case Hardened

Like anything rare, the value of the Classic Knife Blue Gem skins will likely continue to rise. This may not be true for the lower tiers. However, anything considered tier 1 is something special. And if you have any of the 3 listed patterns in this article, you have a true “classic.” Hold onto it as if you’re rushing B and your life depends on it.

To Sum Up

Sure, values range from a few hundred dollars all the way up to the price of a new car. We get it. The Classic Knife Blue Gems really depend on the pattern. However, even if you hold a tier 4 pattern, you have something pretty rare and cool. Sure, there may be a better pattern, but, what you have is gold…unless you have pattern 403. Then, it’s only 2% gold. And if you have a knife worth thousands, you for sure have already memorized the knife commands list.
