Almost a month of rumors, inside information, and years of waiting. Finally, on April 29, 2026, players can say “Welcome back, Cache!” Of course, it’s not the only part of the huge 5Gb update in CS2, yet the most noticeable, especially for veterans. But is it the same location we already know? Without further ado, let’s explore all the details and remember the long history of a classic three-lane map that rewards strategy and teamplay.
In article you will find:
The Return Of Cache
The main star of the new CS2 Update, called The Return of Cache, is undoubtedly the classic map we have been lacking since the release of Counter-Strike 2. Of course, its history begins in Counter-Strike: Source. In 2013, Valve added it to CS:GO alongside Operation Bravo, making Cache an official part of the active map pool. In 2019, it was replaced by Vertigo in the active map pool, but players still could enjoy their favorite locations. Still, Cache wasn’t added to CS2 in 2023.
Finally, after 3 years, Cache returns to the game, but with some minor changes and restrictions. First, Cache was added as a new map to Competitive, Casual, Deathmatch, and Retakes modes. Additionally, players can find it on Faceit. There are rumors that we will see CS2 Cache in a new Premier season. In fact, it means that one of the maps in the active pool will be removed, but there is no official information about which one exactly (some sources name Mirage, but what do you think?).
The other part of The Return Of Cache is that it runs on a new engine (compared to CS:GO), which means new lights and more detailed locations. Also, Valve removed the window on Mid, which can directly affect the balance. As an interesting detail, there is no longer any legendary graffiti commemorating a double no-scope AWP kill by s1mple.
But let’s check what else Valve brings for us in the new CS2 Update.
Maps
As we mentioned, The Return Of Cache update brings other changes and fixes to the game. For example, Valve changed Xbox on Dust II by adding a previously removed spot for jumping onto Short. Also, in Office, there is an enabled collision on the tarp on boxes used around the CT spawn.
As a bonus, Stronghold and Poseidon maps were updated to the latest versions from the Community Workshop.
ANIMGRAPH 2
Among the details in the new CS2 Update are minor adjustments to the viewmodel animations. Also, the players who use Talon Knife and Karambit can now hold their blades correctly while defusing. A small yet great visual bonus, which shows Valve making CS2 better with every detail.
Sound
There are also minor mix changes and sound adjustments in the game. In addition, Valve fixed the issue where the C4 equip sound was not interrupted by other equip sounds. Also, the developer removed the first-person death sound effect that played when the music kit’s death cue was inaudible.
Misc
Last but not least, Valve released a shader fix for Ambient Occlusion when using the alpha test. As a result, it has led to overly dark, chunky silhouettes, such as those on railings in Mirage.
Additionally, the new CS2 Update fixed a funny bug that could make any player a “civilian.” After throwing a grenade and switching a hand (from right to left), it was possible to hold no weapon. Unfortunately for meme lovers, it’s not possible for now.
Conclusion
Valve has brought us many small updates in the last few weeks, but, without a doubt, bringing Cache to CS2 surpassed them all. Of course, first, the rumor that Cache will return has sounded like an April joke. At the same time, as you can see, the wishes of many players became true. And the only thing we can add is welcome back, Cache! Let’s find a new match right now and return to our favorite locations.
